What is compound butter

Compound butter, also known as flavored butter, is a mixture of softened or melted butter combined with herbs, spices, and other flavoring agents such as garlic, shallots, lemon juice, or zest. You can also add any seasoning of your choice to create a flavor profile that reflects your tastes. Compound butter can be used as a spread on bread or to top vegetables, pasta dishes, seafood, steak, and other proteins.

I have shared my garlic butter, pesto butter and cowboy butter dipping sauce here on the website but today's cajun butter recipe is a good one to have in your cooking repertoire.

What is Cajun Butter

Cajun garlic butter is a combination of butter (salted or unsalted) with cajun seasonings, garlic, herbs and lemon juice and zest if you want.

You don't even need to make your own cajun seasoning for this recipe. You can simply buy your favorite brand of Cajun seasoning to make this foolproof 5 minutes compound butter.
  • Versatile: as mentioned above, this recipe is good and it adds so much flavor to whatever dish you add it to. It’s great for an appetizer spread on crostini, it goes well with baked or grilled shrimp, crab legs, crawfish, or other seafood. You can also use it as a marinade as I did with my roast chicken recipe or brush it over grilled meats. A great addition to any entertainment table, it is sure a great way to impress your guests.
  • Easily Customizable: this is the beauty of this recipe! The base is butter and cajun seasonings, but the addition of garlic, herbs, and lemon is all up to you, allowing you to adjust the flavors to your liking. You can make it mild or spicy if you want as well.
  • It can be made well ahead of time and keeps well in the fridge for a few days. You can also make a large batch and store it in the freezer for convenience. What you will need

  • Unsalted butter: this is important as it will cut down on the overall amount of salt in the dish. Especially if using cajun seasoning that already contains salt.
  • Cajun seasoning: I used homemade cajun seasoning. You can use storebought but ensure to buy one that is salt-free or at least low in sodium. when I am unable to make mine, I use Aldi's brand as it's really good.
  • Garlic: I used fresh minced garlic for this recipe for a more intense garlicky flavor. If you would like to keep your cajun butter in the fridge longer than 5 days then substitute for a good quality garlic powder or granules.
  • Lemon juice: this is optional but it does add a nice balance to the cajun butter.
  • Parsley: this s optional but you can add it if you prefer. You can also use any fresh herbs of your choice.
