Is France school hard? ›

The French education system offers an inflexible approach to education; one where the teacher has absolute authority, tough grading and rote learning are the norm, where high academic standards are demanded in reading, writing and arithmetic.

French is taught to students in all grades from Nursery to Grade 5. Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten have two 45-minute lessons of French each week, and students in Grades 1-5 have four 1-hour lessons each week. ISP is an English medium school, but our students speak over 60 different languages.

School routine

Generally speaking, the school day in France is from 8:30 until 4:30, but it varies depending on which area you live in. This is longer than the typical school day in the UK or America, but there is a longer lunch break and two other breaks during the day. There are 24 hours of lessons a week.

Eighth grade (also 8th Grade or Grade 8) is the eighth year of formal or compulsory education in the United States of America. The eighth grade is the second, third, or fourth (and typically final) year of middle school. Students in eighth grade are usually 13-14 years old.

In France, educational instruction is compulsory for children between the ages of 3 and 16. The school year begins in September and ends in late June/early July. Children either attend public schools, which are free, secular, and coeducational, or private schools.

French schools have five holidays during the year: All Saints 'autumn' break, Christmas, winter break, spring holiday (Easter), and the summer holiday. The breaks are usually two weeks except for summer holidays which last eight weeks.

But we tend to put children to bed around 7pm whereas French children stay up until 8.30-9pm, so the amount of sleep they are getting is the same really.

French lunches have multiple courses! They start with a vegetable, such as a leafy lettuce salad, a cucumber tomato salad or beets. Next up is a warm main dish, which almost always includes another veggie. Think sliced roast beef with baked potatoes, veal with mushrooms and broccoli or breaded fish with cauliflower.
